Crossroads : Agriculture and Spirituality

Contents

In Western societies, people rarely experience a link between agriculture and spirituality. Yet there is an important connection, and it can be experienced at a profound level. While many traditional cultures are built upon a relationship between god(s), people and nature, their assimilation into the global capitalist community often destroys this link.

That same global community is now confronted by an acute ecological crisis, stretching the bounds of our mechanistic view of nature. Agricultural systems are very much affected by this crisis. We could react in any number of ways: we can ignore the problems, we can research new technological solutions, or we can rethink our relationship with nature and agriculture, leading to an ecologically-sound agriculture controlled by farmers themselves and not by agribusiness.

Author

Crossroads, an initiative of the chaplaincies of both Dutch and international students at the Wageningen Agricultural University, has taken up the challenge. They invited Dr. Vandana Shiva (Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy, New Delhi), Prof. Henk Verhoog (Department of the Philosophy of Biology, University of Leiden), Prof. Gerrit Huizer (Director, Third World Centre, University of Nijmegen), Petran Kockelkoren (researcher in Systematic Philosophy, University of Twente), and environmental philosopher Wim Zweers to review the issue of agriculture and spirituality. The result is this very lively, dynamic book, exploring the relationship between people and the land, agriculture and spirituality, in a number of cultures.
